Registration Deadline: Mar 5, 2026 10:30 AM

1.5 Hour Interactive Workshop | A Career Bridge & SGS Collaboration

Many graduate students are being asked, sometimes for the first time, to move beyond traditional academic CVs and explain their work in narrative form. Whether you're applying for funding that requires a narrative CV or exploring industry roles that expect a concise, skills-focused résumé, the challenge is often the same: how do you clearly explain what you do, why it matters, and what value you bring?

This workshop introduces narrative CVs as a practical and transferable framework for communicating your academic experience across both academic and non-academic contexts. Because narrative CVs are still new to many graduate students, and increasingly required by major funders (TriAgency), this session offers guidance, examples, and structured practice to help you feel more confident using them. You'll also learn how the same storytelling principles underpin effective industry résumés.

Rather than treating academic and industry applications as separate, this workshop helps you build a strong professional narrative that can be adapted for funding applications, résumés, cover letters, and interviews.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Understand how narrative CVs and industry résumés rely on similar storytelling principles
  • Practice translating research, teaching, leadership, and service into clear impact-focused narratives
  • Learn how to move from listing activities to explaining contributions, outcomes, and skills
  • Gain strategies for adapting one professional story across academic and industry contexts

This workshop is ideal for master's students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral scholars who are encountering narrative CVs for funding applications, curious about industry careers, or both. Co-Led by a Career Bridge Career Coach, Andres Banda Penafiel and Manager, Graduate Student Engagement, Megan Hébert, the session includes relatable examples, guided exercises, and time for reflection and questions. No prior experience with narrative CVs or a polished résumé is required.

If you are a Postdoctoral Fellow, please email sgs.pd@uleth.ca to register.
